According to her tombstone at
Mt. Clark Cemetery, Linn County, Iowa, Sabra Getchell
CROSBY died September 12, 1864, at the age of 65 years,
4 months, and 5 days. Sabra Getchell and Manson Crosby were
married February 21, 1820, and were living in Penobscot County,
Maine, at the time of the 1850 census. (A link to their family
information is provided below.)
According to the biography of their son, Asa T. CROSBY, which
was published in Portrait and Biographical Album of
Linn County, Iowa, Chapman Bros: Chicago, 1887,
Sabra Getchell was born in Sidney, Maine, and
was thedaughter of William and Olive (PIERCE) GETCHELL,
natives of Massachusetts.
According to the book, Family
of Samuel Getchell of Salisbury, Mass., by
Everett Getchell and Frederick Getchell, published Boston, New
England Historic Genealogical Society; 1909, Samuel
Getchell married, in 1790, Olive PIERCE. The
book indicates that this Samuel Getchell was born August 15,
1745, and was the son of
John
Getchell, Jr. and Mary BARBOUR.
The IGI for the state of Maine has an entry for the marriage of
Samuel GETCHELL and Olive PIERCE
on October 21, 1779, at Hallowel, Kennebec County, Maine. If
Sabra Getchell Crosby was their daughter, she would have been
born in the twentieth year of their marriage.
The current focus of our Getchell research is to confirm the
names of Sabra's parents.
Information about the Getchell/Gatchell families will be added
as time permits. We have not determined the validity of
information in the Getchell genealogy mentioned above. Perhaps
other researchers can provide some of the verifications needed;
if so, we will be glad to post that information here.
